Default Houston

As much as the traffic sucks, all the freeways do make it convenient when moving across town. I think Houston has to have good freeways be necessity because it is over 630 square miles in size, now that's big!

Might as well just take out El Paso and Austin.

Houston and Dallas have very expansive systems with several tolls and loops, even smaller loops around downtown. Fort Worth's system, while large in its own right, is very simple to follow, since it's basically a cross within a backwards 'D' and one tollway in the southwest (and no loop around downtown). San Antonio is pretty much in between both of those examples, featuring a relatively simple system yet being pretty massive as well.

For me, San Antonio's double loop system is the easiest to navigate and to add expansion to. Dallas freeways are great in the northern suburbs but downtown is a jumbled mess of crumbling infrastructure. Austin? Let's not go there.

As unappealing as they are, Houston freeways are definitely the best.

Do you think 1604 in San Antonio will be upgraded to a full freeway loop, or is that something planned well into the future?

That's already under construction as we speak. To be completed in 2016.
Down the road they will probably add toll lanes all the way over the northern half of 1604.

Houston has a very complex freeway system. So many lanes and options, it's impressive. The negative will still always be the traffic though. Such a big city with so many cars. Katy freeway is insane during rush hour.

15 years ago, SA had few freeway lanes, no tall interchanges, everything was blah. Now they have massive interchanges and 10 to 12 lanes freeways. Add to that Wurzbach pkwy is almost finished. All of this is with no tolls though that is changing very soon (I don't mind). People often compliment the ease of getting around SA and the traffic isn't as horrific as the other major Texas metros. The freeway system in SA is planned really well. It has to be with the constant influx of new residents.

San Antonio hands down.

Houston and it's massive system I s a close second, San Antonio has a few traffic areas with a majority of the city zipping along at rush hour. Dallas looks like LA and has freeway going in every direction but gridlock is still prevalent all over.
