Hi all,
Looking for a good low-key, basic cowboy boot that one can wear for a casual night out in town or at the office and on the ranch. Anyone have any advice on a brand or style that would work? Thanks. Nothing exotic or flashy, just basic cowboy boots. Thanks.

Get thee to a good boot store and let the folks there guide you. That's what they do.

Quite a difference in those uses. Any boot worn "on the ranch" isn't going to look good for dress wear very long. As has been said already, visit a store specializing in Western wear, or a full-service Western-style boot seller.

Hum...casual wear and ranch wear are some what different. I don't have time to explain but if you don't plan on doing any riding, look into a pair of Roper Boots.

Goat leather is especially comfortable for everyday wear. But I agree with others--a working or riding boot is a whole "nuther" thing.

I'd say invest in a good pair of elephant boots. They'll come in different styles, just get the one you like and feel comfortable in and that looks to you like they'll work in the different situations you want them to. You don't have to break the bank to get a decent pair. They are tough enough to handle any job and IMO classy enough to be worn anywhere. Depending on where you've been in them and where you're going, just make sure you dust them off and clean the soles.

I would also recommend ropers. The two biggest western wear stores in my area of Texas are probably Shepler's and Cavender's. My wife recently bought some new ropers and shopped both places. At Shepler's, there were two teenage girls working in the boot dept. and neither appeared to know much about boots or care about the customers. At Cavenders she was assisted by a neatly dressed young man who knew his stuff and went out of his way to be helpful. He even stretched them for her as they were a bit tight.

Cavenders is where we will shop from here on out.

I've worn western boots all my life, beginning with my first pair of Tony Lama made by "the man" himself, long before he gained international fame. Their motto is "The World's Most Recognized Boot Brand Since 1911." I have never worn another brand. I bought my last pair at the factory store in El Paso.

Justin Boots are another old line popular brand, now sold by stores like Shepler's.

Acme Boots were once very popular due to competitive pricing and are still available, although the company was bought out some time back.

With the exception of a pair of Justin ropers, I've always worn Tony Lama's and the TL's are my boot of choice.
