So far I've lived in 4 of the places from the list and my favorite has been San Antonio. The 3 things I liked from it were....

1. Commute time. I lived very far away from my job and school and it did not take me too long to get from one to the other.

2. Low Crime Rate Compared to other cities its size. (Specifically Dallas)

3. Great Night Life and Cultural Diversification

I have only lived in San Antonio. I think I would like Corpus Christi or McAllen more, maybe Brownsville too, although I haven't even visited it.

If I had to choose from that list (and thankfully in real life I don't) I'd probably go with Fort Worth. I love the mixture of old and new, and the artsy vibe that is always surprising to me in that city. I like that it has some cool suburbs that aren't all "Frisco'd out" to the west. That's probably where I would head. Plus it's close to DFW airport which we use a lot, and it's pretty centrally located in the state without having to deal with some of the water issues that can plague the Hill Country.

I like Austin and San Antonio, but the cost of living and traffic in Austin leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and San Antonio - while really cool in many ways - is just too arid and southwestern in feel for my taste. Two of our sons live in the Austin area, and I like visiting them but I don't want to live there.

I wish I'd bought the sign I saw somewhere in my travels that said "Life's too short to live in Dallas." I live an hour and a half from there and I like that it's convenient if I need it, but I don't have to live there.

Houston is another city that I like to visit on occasion. But it has negatives that would make me not want to live there too - for instance the humidity, the traffic, etc. But it does have a great foodie scene (as does Austin).

Those would be the only ones I would move to without kicking and screaming but I'm very happily living within a few hours' of all of them. The others - not even on my radar.

It's a humid city for sure, but I can see how it would seem arid to someone from the Southeast.

Definitely doesn't feel southwestern at all to me, though. The culture of SA fits in with the rest of the Triangle; not El Paso or any points west. Like Austin, it's not southern or southwestern. Just strictly Texan.

Yeah, but it's more arid than NE Texas!
