My family is moving down to Waco this week, and I've been curious - what has everyone's experience with the WDFM been?

Specifically, are the prices good (typically)? Any vendor recommendations? Do any of the vendors there sell vegan cheese alternatives? lol

Thanks in advance

Mod cut: how many times do I need to remind you not to discuss moderator action in the forum?
I used to go when I was at Baylor. Prices were a little high, but that's typical for these newer "trendy" farmers markets. Great home made food options.. Assuming most the stuff is still the same you should try the brick oven pizza or the breakfast tacos from the taco truck.

I loved going. Prices seemed normal for a small local business type deal. I have not lived there for 2 1/2 years, so I am not current on the vendors, but I never was disappointed when I went.

It's pretty nice and a fun thing to do with the family. There is usually music and venders selling various breakfast options.

As for the groceries. The people running it have fairly strict rules requiring that produce and goods are locally produced within a certain radius of Waco so you don't get wholesalers coming in with boxes of produce from elsewhere like at some farmers markets. Also prevents junk venders selling flea market type stuff. That also means that depending on the time of year the pickings can be somewhat slim. Unfortunately I have 2 kids playing youth soccer which means most of my Saturday mornings are occupied with soccer and we don't get there as much as I'd like.

There are an eclectic mix of growers. The World Hunger Relief farm and the Homestead Heritage people have pretty good booths. There are a variety of other produce, dairy, and meat venders. Certainly more meat than one might find at a west coast farmer's market. This is Texas after all and people like their grass fed organic beef.

I expect you'll have a hard time finding vegan cheese alternatives. I'm not even sure what those would be. More likely you'll have to go to one of the local HEB groceries for that sort of specialty item. But there are some excellent artisan cheese venders at the market.

The Waco Farmer's Market is excellent. You can find a list of vendors here:

Vendors at Market | Waco Downtown Farmers Market

There is both a Saturday and a Tuesday market.

I've never heard of a vegan cheese alternative. So I'm no help there. There is a great vegetarian restaurant, where everything is grown on site called Lula Janes. It is close to the Farmer's Market. Check it out.

Lula Jane's

There are a couple people at work here in Waco who are vegan. So I'm sure there are some places where you can get what you need in the area.

It's lovely.

I'm back and forth between Waco and Houston right now, but I get out there some weekends and enjoy it. My mom goes often.
