He's not concerned with consumer protection. He's concerned with protecting his buddies in the car dealerships by doing his part to keep government-sponsored anti-competitiveness laws on the books.

Who is being steered into third party warranties? I've never bought new and I've never bought such a warranty. Why does the Guv have to jibber-jabber about that?

I'm not sure what the hubbub is about. If Tesla's not financially healthy enough to step up and open a few big dealerships, then that's not anyone's problem but theirs.

Operating income of -$186.7M in FY 2014 tells me all I want to know.

Default Greg Abbott is worse than Rick Perry ever was

And that's saying something.

Not to mention he's passive, wishy-washy and evasive.

It's obvious he's playing to his donors on the Tesla issue. What happened to the free market and competition?

Tesla doesn't sell through dealerships, which is why our idiot governor is so busy protecting his buddies.

In fairness, Tesla is hardly the poster child for free market anything. What revenue they do have comes from selling 'credits' to other car manufacturers so that their fleet averages are within federal guidelines. It's purely a bureaucratic, paper transaction. Tesla makes X number of Green Widgets and gets Green Points and turns around and sells them to Ford or Chevy who need them to stay in business.

Tesla (the cars) are neat but they are extraordinarily political and wouldn't even have made it this far without a ton of government support.

And that is exactly how the system is supposed to work! Ford and Chevy don't want to pay extra so it is incentive for them in the future to produce more efficient autos.

Regarding extended warranties these are high profit items so if consumers think that is the best way to take care of their vehicle they will be steered into life-of-the-vehicle service through the dealer. If the consumer thinks only the dealer can diagnose certain problems (a great way to start a monopoly) they will be under the impression that this huge premium is necessary. All of this benefits the dealer more than the consumer, just look at all the mediocre reviews for, e.g. Roger Beasley. And after dealing with Howdy Honda service where they wanted me to wait a month for a part I say dealers deserve no special protections, only more competition whether it be from direct sales or third party.

Big Texas Conservative government at work
I thought conservatives were for freedom and free market?
Or is it only when is convenient?
