To plan my trip around Texas, starting the 9th of April for two weeks, I would like to know where I must go to meet genuine American cowboys.

Pls note that I do not like big cities like Houston or Dallas, I prefer some little towns like Luckenbach.....
I am with my family: husband and two sons 12 and 14 and we rent a car in Houston for the whole trip.

I would like to spend some days in a ranch because I am cray about horses and specially Quarter-Horses (I plan to visit th museum in Amarillo of course).

Could you pls help ?

Come to Abilene and visit Frontier Texas. It is an award winning old west museum--even got a write-up in the New York Times. While here, go 8 miles south to Buffalo Gap Historical Village. Check the times it is open. Eat at Perini's Ranch while in Buffalo Gap--rated one of the best steaks in the state and lots of old west flavor.

I agree with the Buffalo Gap reference. They've got a lot of great things there. Hadn't been there in years, but will plan to go again.

There is always King Ranch. 825,000 acres(larger than Rode Island.), 60,000 head of cattle and 300 quarter horses.

It will take a serious amount of driving time from any major city, but the new equestrian guy at Lajitas is great and bigtime into quarter horses:

Lajitas, The Ultimate Hideout

I'd suggest calling the resort and asking about him. Can't remember the name, but I think it may begin with O... Oscar maybe.

I know Lajitas is a resort, but it is extremely desolate and exactly like the Texas stereotype you might be seeking. Is it how 99% of Texans live? No. Is it like every western movie you've ever seen? 100% yes. Is it genuine? Sort of. Outside the resort and the surrounding towns are definitely West Texas genuine. Some pretty weird folks living out in the desert. Go out there and you can do all the riding, shooting, & hunting you'd like if you have the $$$.
