I feel that Houston has much more going for it, at least in due time. But so far, Dallas has done the better job in meeting functional metrics.

Default Both places are great

There are a few things that conclusively differentiate the 2 places. The biggest difference by FAR is the Texas Medical Center. Because of the size and scale of this Medical Center(the largest in the world). It's like the Silicon Valley of the health care industry. it is the world leader.NOW LISTEN TO THIS PART BECAUSE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT> THE TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER IS NOT SOME HEADQUARTERS THAT WAS PIMPED AWAY FROM ANOTHER STATE. No sir it is home grown and has developed there over the years. It is above and beyond anything that Dallas has. All other differences take a back seat to this one. Dallas has no answer for this and all those other little projects that we argue about here are minuscule when compared to The Texas Medical Center.
Otherwise there is a laundry list of little, tiny, bickering and pretentious arguments about parks, neighborhoods, walkable areas, cool building projects etc. I've heard them all. Bla, bla, bla!

Well I'm trying to stay out of this back and forth, but the Port of Houston is the other game-changer (besides the Texas Medical Center).

Default Yes the Port

Now the Dallas folks will argue back that they have the better airport we can't deny that but yes Dallas has no sea port. I will argue that Houston still has the edge here. Dallas also has an inland port on the south side.

The size of the Medical center? I mean, I guess, it's cool. But it's like Dallas DART being the longest light rail in the US. Massachusetts and New Jersey are the dominant medical 'silicon valley' type states in the US. Houston isn't even top 10 and neither is Dallas.

The Houston Medical Center's dominance is also held back by stupid policies at the state level (highest number of uninsured, lower number of doctors per 100k compared to the other major metros) , just like the Port of Houston is.

The Med centre is pretty impressive, I agree. Lots of exciting cutting edge stuff happens there.

DFW is no slacker when it comes to hospitals though. For most medical needs of average people who live in the respective cities, there really isn't a big difference in the quality of healthcare they can get.

Default Quality of Healthcare

The quality of healthcare for local residents is similar but the Texas Medical Center attracts a large amount of people from all over the world. There are over 20,000 physicians and 106,000 employees in one medical complex? . That is almost as many jobs as are in all of Downtown Dallas. Yes Dallas has great healthcare but this is totally different.

Yeah but unless you work in the industry it has little to no impact on your day to day life. It's more like an industry than anything else in the way Houston is a big oil city and Dallas is big on Telecom and Airlines. Your cellphone reception and airport service are about the same in both cities and both cities if that makes sense.

Default Big Oil City?

Houston Is a "world leader" in both Healthcare and Energy. BTW the GAWC has Houston listed as an Alpha Wold Class City. Dallas is classified as Beta which is a step lower than Alpha.

Right, but again that is like comparing DFW as an Airline HQ vs Houston. Both have similar levels of places you can fly to but if you work in the Aviation industry Dallas is clearly the bigger deal.

It isn't a big difference in the daily experience of people who live there.
