We are looking to move to a warmer climate. My husband has been a diesel mechanic up in North Dakota oilfields. We have a 14 year old daughter. Just wondering everyone's take on that area and mechanic job availability.

Beaumont is not a safe city to be in at all. You're gonna have big city crime in a town of a little over 100,000.

I'd look for an area outside of Beaumont to live. Maybe Lumberton or Mid County.

I think the job shouldn't be that hard to come by, so you'll be alright in that regard. Lots of people work but don't live in Beaumont. That's what I do.

Please don't recommend Lumberton to them. They may not be familiar with the culture of racism and Hardin County has it BAD, although Southeast Texas as a whole is pretty intolerant. I say they should try living in Liberty and just commuting. They would get the best of both world! Beaumont on one side and Houston on the other.

The crime is mostly concentrated north and south, especially on MLK. One can live in the West End and not see "as much" crime

Yes, Beaumont has gotten increasingly violent over the tears, but primarily in the areas I mentioned. I currently live in Baton Rouge and haven't resided in Beaumont since 2007, and all I can say is that 9 murders a year doesn't look nearly as bad as 140+ for a city that only has twice the population of Beaumont. I live in a nice area in Baton Rouge and learned this morning that there were 8 murders alone in my zip code according to reports... I think someone can live peacefully in the West End, even the Folsom/Crow Rd. Area (considered to be NW) just to be close to work and after a couple years, move out from being a renter and buy in surrounding areas.

But can you handle triple digits in summer, frequent torrential rain, hurricanes and tropical storms, and the culture shock ? The Dakota's don't have diversity. Beaumont is predominantly BLACK

If the op wants they can try the West End, although even it ain't crime free.

Down Gladys they have homes in varying price ranges to fit just about anyone. They even have homes that would cost nearly a million in other states (Thomas Street).

You'll want to stay far away from Beaumont public schools. Look into Kelly Monsignor High School and see if you can make that work.
