I know of the Guitar mansion, but are there others in Abilene that are worth looking at?

There are lots of interesting homes north of downtown, but I only know of one that is open to the public, the Swenson House which is on the National Historic Homes list and one across the street from it is also, but I can't remember the name of it. I will try to get that information for you. If you really want to see a mansion, do not visit my house. (My wife and I just moved to a small condo which I call the mini-mansion.)

This page gives information as to when you can attend a dinner in the Swenson House. There is one a month.

OMG!!!!!!! I guess I've never gone far enough on Buffalo Gap Road to see this place, LOL! It's absolutely stunning! And to think some people are paying $500K for ugly McMansions, huh?!

They have to be fibbing about the average electric bill, though. $450 per month for a 11,500 sq. ft. mansion? Oh, I don't think so! (Unless they only use a third of the rooms!)

I thought you were looking for historical mansions. This one is incredible. The "new" Guitar mansion is also incredible.

This place is in one Abilene's best areas. Behind it is a subdivision with large McMansions that are not quite as costly as this one.

This home was built in 1983 for $7,000,000. At the time, we were in a huge boom. We had a brief bust in the mid-eighties, and the house was sold well below its cost to build. The town is on the move again, and it could be just the place for someone.

If you have $1,000,000, it is a bargain.

Most high end homes are in that area, south of that area, and west of that area. The Southwest part of town going toward Buffalo Gap and the south side of the city--just outside the city going toward Potosi, and the Southeast in subdivisions like Saddle Creek are extremely nice and quite a bit cheaper than anywhere else in the country. In addition, all of these homes have beautiful mountain (or hill) views. (There was quite a discussion on another forum about whether the areas south of Abilene are small mountains, large hills, or mesas. One is names Steamboat Mountain, so I don't know.)

Actually just interested in very large homes with interesting architecture that would be neat to drive up and see. My parents just moved to Abilene and live close to the big white elephant on Buffalo Gap road. I've visited them a few times, but don't remember any other big mansions near this one....seems like it is out of place and thats probably why there aren't a lot of buyers. I guess in 1983, this part of town was out "in the country", but now Abilene has grown up around this house and so it sticks out like a sore thumb.
