I'm always appalled at how certain states are labeled "Yankee" states, even those that were established AFTER when the notion of an Yankee was already outdated...

None of these. I've never heard anyone call people from those states Yankees.

Maryland. I've never understood why the U.S. Census bureau considers Maryland and Delaware Southern states. Washington D.C. is supposed part of the South region. Those are Northeastern to me.

Exactly. "Yankee" states wore blue in the Civil War. Missouri and Kentucky were "border states" and their residents fought for both sides. All of those far western states weren't even part of the USA back then.

None of the states you put in your poll although I considered voting for Kentucky and/or Maryland as they didn't secede during the War of Northern Aggression.

Unfortunately TexasReb is not here to give us a dissertation on these subjects.

I understand the calling of people from outside the state(s), especially northern climes, being called Yankees. This is unfortunate. Depending on their attitudes and and taking into consideration the embracing of the South OR Texas they may be called and aptly called carpetbaggers. Most migrating Yankees post CW were carpetbaggers.

All of New England: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, plus New York.

None of them. Maybe Maryland, but it's below the M-D line. Western states aren't Yankee states. The term Yankee only applies to a demonic baseball team.

I don't consider any of these to be "yankee states." I consider New England to be "yankee" but I don't hold it against them - LOL.

None of these. The only possible exception would be Maryland, but that's borderline.
