IMO both are pretty great. They draw about the same etc. From a personal perspective I strongly prefer the rodeo, however.

You can't beat the atmosphere and history with the setting at Fair Park. Does the Rodeo have the same amount of traditions and permanent fixtures (Big Tex, Cotton Bowl, Museums, Texas Star, Gondolas, exhibits, famous foods, etc.)? It's also nice that the state fair has direct rail access to the front gates. The state fair is also super clean and well kept.

I've never been to the rodeo. Curious what you feel makes it a better event?

I’m pretty neutral here, both are great. However if there is something Texas State Fair it’s not the fixtures and traditiona. Cotton Bow? Astrodome. Museums? Yes. Exhibits? Yes. Famous Foods? You joking? Rodeo has the “world BBQ championship”. In fact, the rodeo itself is a tradition. And yes, Big Tex is by far the incomparably best mascot of the two, but Rodeo has the traiditionsl music lineup that’s the State Fair’s is incomparable. By events and tradition, there’s no lopsided winner. There’s pros and cons and opinions.

I was going to ask if you’ve actually been to the Rodeo, since you’re response makes it seem like you didn’t. But then I saw your next comment.

However, the one thing that the State Fair has that to me is better than Rodeo Houston is that it’s more of a big event space than an arena. Rodeo Houston is also in a large event space but the main event is in the arena.

They are both a lot of fun. I like the Rodeo a little better because of the atmosphere and the music but I think the State Fair has more interesting food concepts.

Very cool thread. It's awesome that Texas has both of these.

Bit tarnished after doing a State Fair trip last year of attending over 20 state fairs.

Texas State Fair was the bottom (worst) event of our year, so I would choose the rodeo hoping for improvement.
I've done the SA rodeo, but not Houston. Grew up on ranches in WY and CO, and competed in rodeo and showmanship events since age 8.

The Texas State fair had minimal 4H / youth displays, and very few animals / showing. But lots of midway / food / carnival 'canned' events (Paying amateurs to display dog tricks, stick horse rodeo...). Car displays were adequate, but we go to State Fairs to interface and learn from 4-H / youth competition and discuss with the youth how they earned a spot at the State Fair and where they want to pursue further studies / contributions to their community. Sadly, there was none of that at the Texas State Fair. (the days we visited). Not sure why anyone would attend Corndogs? Cheese Fries? Stuffed bears? Buy a car?

The livestock showing is mainly done at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. It's smaller than the one in Houston but it's 35 years older and has a gorgeous purpose-built arena for the rodeo.

We went to the State Fair two years ago. Last time was in '78 when I was a grad student at UNT. I thought is was over commercialized from what I remembered. Lots of stuff to see and eat but was somewhat disappointed. Have never been to Houston Rodeo.

I'm not sure the rodeo is a better event. I grew up on farms and ranches so the rodeo resonates with me.
