From the GWB institute:
Yahoo News: The Texas Story: Will Students in West Texas and East Texas Be Ready for Their Futures?.
https://news.yahoo.com/texas-story-s...121500387.html

Gave me a new positive perspective on students coming from those areas.

Many students at Legacy High and Midland High dont apply themselves academically because so many people with only a high school diploma are making six figures in the oilfield. Also the Friday Night Lights seems to be more of a priority than academics in Midland.I think it will be mostly the students who get STEM degrees and become Drs and nurses and engineers and the students who will work in a trade or work on the rigs that achieve the American Dream in Midland.I think some of the Midland ISD students will be stuck working in McJobs all their lives even if they graduate from college.

Just wanted to point out that Legacy High School is in Tyler, Texas, not Longview, TX. Longview is more blue collar, Tyler is more white collar. Tyler has nearly 30,000 more people than Longview. The median age is slightly lower in Tyler. Homes cost a bit more in Tyler but otherwise, the cost of living is very similar (and for the most part, lower than the national average). Tyler is growing while Longview isn't. Longview's crime rate is higher. Longview gets slightly more rain, it's a bit more overcast, fewer sunny days, Longview's unemployment rate is a bit higher than Tyler's and also a bit higher than the national average. Religion is more widespread in Longview than in Tyler. Tyler is more diverse racially.

Just to name a few differences.

And Longview has 417 potholes while Tyler only has 411. (HAHA - as a former resident of Longview, I just had to throw that in there!)

The actual article is about Early College and IB programs at Longview High School...not Legacy HS.

I am talking about Midland Legacy not Legacy in Tyler.I was talking in general how theres many students at Midland High and Midland Legacy that dont take grades seriously because of big money in the oilfield. There is also a Legacy High School in Midland and that was the one I was talking about.

Ok thanks for the clarification. I am not familiar with high schools in Midland but I am with high schools in Longview and Tyler.

LOL! I've lived and worked in both cities and I have to say that I prefer Tyler. Maybe it's the potholes or lack thereof! I mean, Longview IS smaller than Tyler so if your stat is correct, then that's significantly fewer potholes per capita - Ha!
