I'm defining "gay friendly" to mean it's no big deal to openly hold hands with same-sex, adopt a kid, etc. Not "don't ask don't tell," that soft but cruel form of bigotry.
Probably the federal prison in Huntsville would be the most friendly.

Seriously, I cant imagine any place in texas being "gay friendly". "Gay semi-tolerant" maybe.

well this is definitely bs because the area of Houston I'm in in probably 40% gay and the mayor marches with them once a year. Same with Dallas and Austin. I mean are you really telling me that a city that elected a transgendered counsel-person isn't gay friendly? Or with gay sheriff? what are you smoking dood i want some!

While I haven't been to Texas (Houston) in over 15 years, I would imagine that a lot of urban areas would be quite friendly or at least tolerant. I mean these are some of the largest cities in America there has to be gays somewhere! I have my heart set on relocating to Texas in the near future probably Dallas or Houston. Call me naive (or uninformed), but being a gay man and moving there has never been a reservation. I know this doesnt really answer your question, but I think Texas, especially its urban centers are a lil more progressive and less back wood biggot-town than folks like to give credit for!

Top ten cities to live per The Advocate:

The Top Ten Places to Live chosen by The Advocate follow in alphabetical order:
  • -- Columbus, Ohio -- Dallas, Tex. -- Ferndale, Mich. -- Ithaca, N.Y. -- Lexington, Ky. -- Missoula, Mont. -- Portland, Ore. -- San Diego, Calif. -- Santa Fe, N.Mex. -- Tucson, Ariz.
And cities that may surprise you, including the richest county in Texas:

A national magazine has named Jacksonville one of the "top five emerging cities for gays and lesbians."
Really.
Though the claim might not square with the city's conservative image, The Advocate, aimed at a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender audience, recently placed Jacksonville on that exclusive list, along with Plano, Texas; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Anchorage, Alaska.

I have a gay friend who lives in Dallas, I think he might be the only one there. JUST KIDDING !!

Stay away from the honky tonks and you'll be fine.

Correction, tilar is sitting back and waiting to have his ignorance rebuffed with truth. In reality, at least the reality that just about everyone else sees, is that cities like Houston, Dallas and to some extent Austin are pretty openminded these days. I see gay couples all the time and never hear nasty comments toward them.

Perhaps you would be happier in an area that the media tries to tell everyone that is more accepting (but in fact they are not), like the usual media favorites of NYC, Boston, Chicago and California

Oh & Houston is still more Liberal than Dallas, it always has been.
I just, I just.....ugh, I'm tired of defending against fallacies and idiocy.

LA? LA? I hate LA. Dallas is nothing like LA. And I would never want it to be. Who makes up this crap?

I am getting one of those shirts, though.

My sister, who is gay, lives in San Antonio. There seems to be a lot of gay people there, at least I have met a lot of gay people there.
She loves it there and it not afraid to hold her partner's hand in public.
The best of luck to you in your search!
Stephanie
