I plan on taking a series of extended car-camping trips, some of which will find me struggling to stay cool during summer nights. I get the feeling that among the major TX cities/areas, Amarillo is probably about as comfy as it gets during July/August. Or are there other options?

I'll have a battery-powered fan with me, and a spray bottle to spritz myself down with, but that's about it.

I grew up in the DFW area and spent the last 20 years in Austin/San Antonio, so I guess most parts of the state will feel an improvement.

Actually, pretty straight-forward - it is nicer at night the further west you go. I -35 is a convenient landmark, but 'comfortable' at night is probably 100 or so miles west of it, imho.

This is a rainfall map, which pretty much parallels humidity.

It is worth mentioning, though, that July-Sept are the rainy months in El Paso.

Stay away from East Texas that is for sure! As already stated stay west of I35 by 50-100 miles. Altitude also helps so Marathon, Marfa, Ft Davis.

You could also come back in October/November, the whole state will be more barable then.

Looks like Coastal California is calling. It's the only place in the Southwest U.S. with consistently cool/comfortable nighttime temperatures at this time of the year.

Upper elevations of AZ/NM are cool too. I camped up there, it was mid 40's at night and mid 80's in the day.

Definitely not Houston. In the Summer, it feels worse at 10pm than at noon.
