We've just about given up finding the "right" house so we're looking at building. We've been up and down through the Hill Country looking for houses, but never for land. Can anyone help us out?!!

Ideally we would like to find 3-10 acres within 30 minutes of either Austin or San Antonio. It would be great if it already had a well, septic and electric as we are thinking of living in an RV while we have the house built. Wet weather or all weather creek would be a plus. Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Well more than likely you'll have to put in your own septic and well or meter hookup and bring electric in. Most land is sold raw..little to no improvements although you might luck out and catch that oddball piece that has some improvements.

That's a wide area to be looking in. You might want to narrow it down some.

Here's a website for looking at land:

Texas Land for Sale, Texas Farm Homes for Sale, Texas Ranch Homes for Sale

Put in your county and preferences and browse to your hearts desire

You might also want to consider property with a mobile home already on it, as the utilities would already be in place, which could be a considerable savings.

In your searching in the Hill Country, did any particular areas appeal to you more than most? That would be a good place to start.

Here's a map i made a while back that shows exactly where the Hill country range is:

Google Maps

Look for towns around Boerne/Castroville/Canyon Lake as they are about 30mins from SA.

Thanks for the fine suggestions. The Lands of Texas was very helpful, HappyTexan. Also, we are going back over our travels in our mind trying to figure out what area we liked the best as you suggested, TexasHorseLady. I remember standing in the middle of the main street in Comfort, Texas, a few years back when we were in the area for the bluebonnets. There was a gentle breeze blowing. I closed my eyes (no cars, not to worry) and just soaked it all in. It was one of the most peaceful moments I can remember. Maybe that is a start. And, TexasNick, thanks for the map. I was looking through some old posts and found pictures you had posted. You're quite the photo-journalist! Do you have a blog? I would love to see more of your work. I'm a fan.

Thanks to all, JD

PS Nick, I just found your blog on your map...

Nick,

On what road and near what town is that photo at the top of your blog? That is beautiful.

Canine,
I'll have to dig for the exact road, but it's one of the backroads from Junction to Harper.

That is gorgeous. I'm planning a trip down there soon and would love to be on that road. Don't go to any trouble finding the road number, but if you run across it, I would love to know where it is. Many thanks!!!

For some reason, my hill country maps do not put this area (backroads of Junction to Harper) in the "hill country maps". They cut it off right at this point. I wonder if that means they are not considered the hill country?

Anyways, I am pretty sure the road was from JUCTION, Tx to ranch road 377 (somewhere north of the Junction airport) then you'll pass a white water river and then soon you will come to ranch road 385 and it takes you a round-about way to Harper. From there, you can drive 290 from Harper to Fredericksburg, but my personal favorite road (although longer) to get to Fredericksburg would be a little known backroad known as WHITE OAK RD and gets you to 2093 and cuts and winds through several beautiful farms and ranches with hills and green scenery.

Did the directions make sense? No? Well, good...then you'll be prepared...because having no plan and sense of direction is when you find the good stuff.

Take pics! See if you can time your trip with the wildflowers.

Thanks so much. I'm going to try to go around Easter if it works out. I'll print out the information above and follow a map too. I have no sense of direction so goodness knows what I'll find.
