Gosh! I really need some help
. I live in a small town in Louisiana now but when my husband gets back from Iraq I will be relocating to Ft Hood. Is there a nice area that anyone will recommend or nice apartments? I also have 3 boys, youngest having Down Syndrome so I need to be in a good neighbor hood and nice school! We don't want to live on base and we just got married a week before he left to go to Iraq sssooooo I no nothing about tx. People tell me just dont stay around base in the funky neighbor hoods
! Also I heard Harker Heights and C. Cove is a good area !

Use maps.google.com and search zip code 76543. This will be the Fort Hood/Killen area. Zoom out a bit and you'll see US 190, the principle thru fare, from Lampasas to Temple. This will be your area, depending on how far the Captain wants to drive to the post. There's plenty of military in both directions.

grew up in the area we are a 1st calv family, Ft. hood is not near as bad as it's made out to be def. try lampasas and heights is just like Hood's nicer suburb and post housing actually has improved quite a bit so if it takes you some time to find a place it will not be a bad temporary situation. I am in nearly the oppisite situation as you, after growing up in an army family constantly in central TX. I married a man in the coast guard and next month I am moving to small town (morgan city) Louisiana and I know nothing about it I'm kinda freaking out myself.

Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Killeen proper, and Nolanville are all local to Fort Hood and all are for the most part very nice but all have spots that aren't so nice. Just like any other place.
I don't suggest living further out than those areas. Although when you look on the map Lampasas and Temple look close enough to make a daily trip to and from the post, many or most people that I knew when I lived there found that it's not quite as easy as they expected. Especially if the Soldier is in a CDR position or a Senior NCO position and must be able to be at the post quickly to resolve issues that crop up. Just my opinion though.
Fort Hood itself is a city of sorts. It's unlike any miltary post that I have ever lived in that it is completely self contained and offers so many resources for families there. In fact, you will find yourself overwhelmed by the resources offered to your family while stationed there, even for special needs children.
I lived on post while there. Post housing is very nice with the exception of some older housing that is slated to be either completely renovated or razed and rebuilt. My suggestion is to live on post, if it available. That way you can easily access all resources and benefits that are extended to you and your children through your Husband's service. That is just my humble opinion.

Gosh! I really need some help 
. I live in a small town in Louisiana now but when my husband gets back from Iraq I will be relocating to Ft Hood. Is there a nice area that anyone will recommend or nice apartments? I also have 3 boys, youngest having Down Syndrome so I need to be in a good neighbor hood and nice school! We don't want to live on base and we just got married a week before he left to go to Iraq sssooooo I no nothing about tx. People tell me just dont stay around base in the funky neighbor hoods 
! Also I heard Harker Heights and C. Cove is a good area !
