Hello my name is Dezz. Im a junior living in San Marcos Texas and I really love it here minus the fact that Ive been here my whole life. I would love to take off to the mountains in either Colorado, California or Washington but out of state tuition is killer!

Anyway so Ive begin to look more in state but Im having alot of trouble. I want a small town, interesting place, pretty location and artsy if at all possible. I'm looking to major in media communication or photography. I love nature. I'm kinda a hippie to some peoples definition of the word, minus the drugs.

I hate deserts, and big cities, and cant say that have much state spirit or that I like the country/cowboy side of Texas.

The closest fit Ive seen so far has been Alpine TX so any more info on that would be awesome. And generally any info would be amazing, I really don't know all that much about Texas minus a small area in the Hill Country. Anyways Thanks!

If you're in college then you should be choosing a college not a town. That said, the kind of college town you are describing sounds like a lot of places I've been, just none of them in Texas.

Eugene OR
Corvallis OR
Bellingham WA
Olympia WA
Eureka CA
Santa Cruz CA
Chico CA
Santa Barbara CA
Fort Collins CO
Flagstaff AZ
Las Cruces NM
Bozeman MT

are some places that come to mind.

But Texas???? I don't know what to tell you. Denton? Honestly I would think that most college students looking for an artsy community in Texas are probably going to head to Austin. But that's not exactly a small town.

I'd look into UNT (excellent school for the arts) in Denton, or Sul Ross SU in Alpine.

If you've never visited the College of Fine Arts at UT San Antonio, you should do so. It's an excellent art school on a great new campus with all sorts of options for student housing surrounding the campus. Located on the north side of the city, it is still "remote" enough to be somewhat like a small town. Easy to bike to and from school (or walk).
