Yes I know its due to the storm, but I gatta admit that the southern states actually can get pretty cold during the fall / winter months. We just seem not to get anywhere near as much snow.

The panhandle area gets clobbered with multiple cold snaps/snow/ice storms just about every year. A high school friend has a ranch outside Dumas.......winters are no picnic for him.

Yes. it's cold here today (25°F) but, like a lot of the South, we need a really cold spell to kill off some of these insects that now plague the South Plains. For many years in the past the boll weevil couldn't survive up here but now it does. A few days of below zero degree temperatures, like a few years ago, would serve us well right now.

Since we're talking about cold snaps and outdoor life and what not. I have wondered, in terms of snakes - is it generally safe to walk through tall grass when the temps drop to lets say the 40's and 30's? .. .. if not, is it safer at lower temperatures?

I wouldnt walk through tall grass anyways.I saw a rattlebug slithering on the ground when it was almost December in West Texas so i would not do it but it would be safer than at 60 or 70 or 80 degrees.

I was in Amarillo this last few days and it was cold and snowy, but thats not uncommon. The weather is extremely bi-polar in that part of the state. 30-50 degree temperature drops in 12 hours are not uncommon when air masses change direction. I remember one time when I was up there it went from 92-28 in 24 hours. Its a lot like Denver. The weather never stays the same for a very long time between October and May.

They move alot slower in the cold, so yeah, I would say it is safer...I don't have any data to back that up, and I have on rare occasion seen snakes in the winter, but in my experience, I would say yes, it is generally safer.
