You can expect lots of stories like this in 2012 when the casino fever hits town:
Couple accused of leaving 8-year-old alone to gamble at Seminole Hard Rock Casino - St. Petersburg Times

This is a very real problem and goes along with the promises of income for everyone. The bright and shiny revitalization of the area wears off when the promises are unfulfilled.

Not to mention that that casino is going to be built in a very out of the way location. I am not an advocate of gambling, nor do I visit casinos (I like to keep my hard earned money). However, if they are going to build the thing, why not put it either downtown to add to the momentum of the ballpark and new arena, or over on the east side where the Sports Arena used to be, which would bring people to that area where the Marina District is (cough) supposed to be being built right now. They put it to a vote when they were going to build the arena, the voters chose the east side location, and the arena is downtown on a tiny lot instead. Why vote, right? And now, lo and behold, more and more people are complaining about the cramped dimensions of the new arena and the tiny seats.

Back to the casino: ITA with what you said. It is a bad thing, in spite of what the casino-owning fat cats want you to believe. People in Toledo are having enough trouble paying their bills without having a place right in their back yard to throw their money away. At least the casinos in Detroit and Windsor are a good hour's drive away, which might discourage some.

It'll be interesting...

They can't put it in a different because people from all over the state voted to add to our state constitution that the Toledo casino MUST be built on that specified site. Legally it would take another constitutional amendment to change it. How stupid is that!

I am just glad Toledo is taking steps in its economy toward green energy and solar energy. Unlike Michigan who puts its faith in the auto industry or in Detroit's case, putting faith in casinos. Sorry, but casinos do not save your city. Detroit still had a dead downtown, abandoned buildings are everywhere, and casinos have not helped one bit.

Lets not forget about the Hollywood film industry that hasnt been too much of a help either. All they do is come into town, take advantage of Michigan's tax incentives and then leave. They care less about Detroit's economy. The only thing Detroit is getting out of the deal is a bunch of celebrities who would never return for any other reason and someone saying "Hey look there is my house right next to that concrete slab where Clint Eastwood is standing....." And now a Hollywood filmmaker wants to turn Mike Bell's transition into office to a reality show.... c'mon man!!!!!

Say...WHAT? Where is the big story in that? So he went from one high profile position to another. Um...doesn't that happen everyday in cities all over the country?

Don't get me wrong, I am a big supporter of Mike Bell. I think he is a very good thing for Toledo, and I am cautiously optomistic that he can begin to turn things around. I like the fact that he ran as an Independent, and, while he is black, I don't think he tries to play the race card at all. He just seems like an all around good guy who wants to see Toledo succeed. It's a new day in Toledo! Buh-bye, Carty...

Carty's administration would have made a good reality show...except it would have been too unbelievable!

I don't think the casino will exacerbate child neglect problems; it will only diversify the reasons given by neglectful parents.

Where are they building the casino exactly? It was my understanding it was to be just off I-75, so that people driving through will be inclined to stop.

It will be in East Toledo or Rossford, not sure which, just off of I-75 at the Miami St. exit. I guess it would be good for pulling in people off the highway, if they are so inclined and have the time to stop, but there is virtually nothing else in that area except for residential streets, a cheap motel, and the Pilkington Glass factory. I just can't picture a casino sitting there, as opposed to downtown or on the east side across from downtown. I guess it remains to be seen.

Especially the part where he allegedly threw the coffee mug at that lady's head. Oh, or the part where he yelled at a bunch of kids for hanging out in Highland Park and referred to one of them as "Tubby". Or...how about when he suggested that the deaf people all move out by the airport? Wow! How many episodes could they make? Maybe enough to run for several seasons.
