I have lived in Chicago (Southside) and am currently living in one of these so-called "bad neighborhoods" (Vaughn/Oakwood). Compared to the States, the "ghettos" here are much more tame. I have not heard one shot or seen any violent or criminal activity so far. In Chicago, the "hood" was real. Toronto - 80 gun murders; Chicago - 600. You do the math. What is coined "ghetto" or "bad neighborhood" in Toronto is usually not even nearly the same as a ghetto in the States.
However, it doesn't mean nothing happens or that nothing could happen. If you look for trouble, trouble will find you.
Oakwood/Vaughn is not a dangerous area. I don't have to live tere to know that
as you can see the result would be much different if we didn't have free healthcare. in the united states many poor people die after being shot because they can't afford medical attention. In Canada you become first priority.
and do any of you live in any low income neighbourhoods in toronto? you can make all the judgement you want from the outside, but your word means nothing unless you've lived there.
most TCHC owned communities lack maintenance and are small segregated isolated communities surrounded by owned houses. jane and finch might look nice if your driving down jane, but take a walk inside the mazes of townhouses and buildings in various different project housing complex's. and its not just Jane and Finch its all of Jane street and various other communities across the city.
The Star
if you take a look at this map youll notice thats homocides happen in small pockets throughout the city , these being mostly low income project housing and throughout the years from 2005-2010 these pockets of murders continue to stay in the same places.
Violent weekend in Toronto with at least 8 shootings (http://www.globallethbridge.com/Violent+weekend+Toronto+with+least+shootings/3865759/story.html - broken link)
I just recently moved away from this area and i grew up there and it is a bad neighbor hood, there was a constant fear to being shot, stabbed, mugged etc. it is a area you want to avoid, There are much better places in Toronto you can live. Avoid living in this area at all cost. I've warned you as a person who lived there for the first 19 years of their life, its just a word to the wise.
it is very dangerous place i really agree with NICKJBOR i read his post he is right
