In the last couple apartments that I have lived in there is no garbage disposal unit under the sink. Is this just a Toronto/Ontario thing or all of Canada? One thing I absolutely hate is is having to pick food garbage out of the drain it just seems like there is a better way lol. I find it curious because every home I have lived in the states has had them. Anyone know?
As I recall from my years in Ontario, they were very rare. You could get them "aftermarket," but typically, houses and apartments did not have them to begin with, and few people got them afterwards. I never lived in a place with one.
I don't have one out here in Alberta. I've never seen a place with one here.

Only heard of that in American TV shows in the 80s and 90s when I was a kid. Never seen one in real life. Always wondered how they work.... but not interested in getting on as it is just one more thing that could brake and I will have to get fixed lol.
This is one of a number of " US things " that never caught on in Canada.
The answer to the " I hate picking things out of the sink " is to not put things in the sink in the first place.
A compost pail with a lid on it under the sink solves that problem in our house. It has a biodegradable bag in it, and it goes out to the green bin daily. Collected by the municipal recycling truck weekly. Everything except meat goes in it.
We call them garburators here, and I've had one in almost every place I've lived. I had one removed though from my current place.
Zoiste, even my mother's place in Maple Ridge has one.
This is the first I've heard people say they aren't common in Canada. Sounds like a regional thing perhaps? Heck you can even buy them at most home stores, even Canadian Tire and Home Depot

There is a switch near the sink. You start running your tap into the sink, place your potato peelings or whatever ( not everything can go down, you wouldn't through in a full root vegetable for example ) turn on the switch and the food gets chopped finely so that it just rinses down the pipes.
They make a bit of noise, but can be quite handy. I got rid of my last one though, since they don't last forever, and now we have an organic waste program in the city.
They are stupid and unnecessary. To not have one is one less potential annoyance when it needs servicing, cleaning, or repair.
