Okay just did the penny test. The back two tires don't pass. The front two do pass. I am sure that must be the cause of the sound. But why wouldn't the tire folks confirm this?? I think I'm measuring corrrectly.

Alot of hard rubber tires meant to provide high mileage actually make alot of noise when the trend starts to wear. Then of course there is uneven wear and many other things that can happen to tires when under inflated. I person never buy anyhting above a 60'000 le tire because i find them to get noisy quicker and ride terrible.

If you bought all four tires from them, they may not want to honor the tread warranty. Don't go by the tread warranty. Different driving styles, road conditions, and weather can effect how fast or slow the tread wears down. A tire dealership I deal with pro-rates the warranty towards the purchase of a new set of tires. Some discount tire warehouses (not to say "Discount Tire" does this) sell cheaply because the tires they sell are old and won't last. I've seen some name brand tire models that were discontinued for several years but were still being sold at discount tire dealers.
