I only know alittle about them but from what I do know is that they have been extremely reliable, a very capable off-roader, and no known issues other than its infamous blind spot which doesn't seem to bother many. Go to edmounds.com or an FJ forum for specific years.
No they have not been discountinued. They are selling well actually which is why Toyota has decided to continue selling them instead of retiring the name.
The frame rust was for the late 90's early 2000's Tacomas and Tundras in the rust belts.
if I had to pick two new stock SUVs for off-road duty it would be the FJ TRD off-road and the jeep wrangler rubicon.
but that brings up the question for the OP both they plan on taking it off road and using it's full capabilites.
FJ Cruiser has good intentions but it is a big PITA to drive on road and has a very harsh ride and, as said many times above, really bad blind spots.
If you are going off road, just get the Wrangler Rubicon. If not, buy neither one.
