rl, you ought to drive both the Yaris and the Fit, and see which one you like better. Being there in the Big Apple, I wouldn't buy new - you will take too much of a hit on depreciation, and the inevitable "urban rash" is that much worse on a new car. Get one where someone else has taken that punch for you. If you found a good Fit with 30 to 60K miles on it, unless it's really been beat on, it should do fine for you.

Being a single guy, let me suggest a 2 door...I'd go for a stickshift too...

Default good advice

i agree about the 2 door, but last time i drove stick was in 86 when i was "practicing" working for a car leasing company, i only drove stick thru parking lots, not on streets

needless to say i don't think my 25 year old stick shift "expertise" in the parking lots will transfer out into these trafficked potholed streets(I'm laughing as i write this!)

it's possible i might take mom's RAV 4 or one of my brother's cars(part of the probate process)

It's interesting, but watch out- the driver's seat doesn't go back very far, either, and I'm only average height. That's the bummer for me, otherwise it's something I'd be interested in. If you're looking at well-equipped Yarises, the Scion xD isn't much more, if any.

I agree with this description of the Yaris. My employer has a number of them and I can't say I enjoy driving them. I agree it is slow and very cheap inside. I don't find it comfortable and as far as I'm concerned the Tercel was a much better little car. We all have our likes and dislikes and I drive many different types vehicles every work day. The Yaris flunks my review.

A good small car would be the Hyundai Accents or the Kia Rio. Not great cars by any means but in comparison to the Yaris, they are a better value. I am very impressed with the new Hyundai Elantra's 40 mpg and 100000 mile warranty. Lots of pep, comfortable and nice looking vehicle. Has received a number of good reviews from Consumer Reports for a few years now.

The Nissan Versa would be worth a look too. To me it was easily the best appointed of that segment. The Civic and Corolla could learn a thing or two from the Versa on interior quality, let alone Yaris. Oddly enough, so could the Sentra.

When I was looking (Dec, '07) the jump from the Fit/Versa to the Civic/Mazda3 wasn't a hard choice. Now with the new Fit having a deadpedal/armrest and the Fiesta, Mazda2, new Versa, that might be different. Of course stupid grin aside the new Mazda3 is a good deal better than my generation and there's the new Focus, Cruze, new Elantra... The dregs of the auto world just keep on getting better.

The Yaris no longer has the center dash pod. I would definitely buy one now.

I have a 08 Yaris sedan and find its very reliable, and very economical,at 80K i've had no problems and the center mounted instuments are a non issue as you adapt very quickly to them.
The car is what it is an economical daily driver thats in all aspects a reliable econobox. if you want speed, styling, handling, and a car that makes a statement look else where, if you want a reliable around town easy on gas commuter it wont let you down.
The previous incarnation was called the Echo and elsewhere in the world the Vitz.also a great forum on the car at yaris world .

Any of you sportcar or bikers recognize the location?

Default does the yaris

have a lot of road roar? I was watching a guy test drive a yaris on youtube and i heard a lot of road noise in the video. my 92 tercel is pretty quiet for a subcompact that weighs slightly less than 1900 lbs, quieter in fact than my 1971 Duster which was filled with road roar and vibration in the floor and steering wheel

i was going to ask does the yaris feel cheaper than an tercel but jimrob said he felt the tercel was better

I had a Yaris. The center dash is pointless, but doesn't really interfere with driving. It's not like you could bring that thing up to speeds where turning away would effect performance. Well, perhaps, since the handling on that thing was akin to driving a wet noodle; it took every bit of precision driving to rise to mediocrity.
