Meh...It just hits the news every time TMC has a recall. Toyota is in a glass house due to their longtime reputation. GM or Chrysler recall something and it doesn't hit the news as its not really newsworthy in the same way.
I have a 2006 Toyota Sequoia with 140K miles and we haven't had one problem with it at all. Now my Nissan Titan that was a POS, rear end went out twice had the Brake judder issue 3 times had to be replace within 30K miles. Radiator fan went out, both of the exhaust manifolds cracked motor mounts went out on and on!!!
It's true, Toyota had somewhat of a gold standard to uphold, which is impossible to do forever. I know the Nissan Pathfinder had a recall a few weeks ago too. Didn't want a big honkin' SUV like that though. A four-banger is fine with the price of gas right now.
I've only got less than 2K on the Rogue so far. Time will tell.
1. No car is ever recalled for any reason other than safety. Recalls say absolutely nothing about the mechanical reliability, performance or structural integrity of the car or any of its accessories, except to the degree that a failure could cause death or injury.
2. When a defect is found, the automaker's legal affairs department decides whether to recall, or to keep quiet and risk a potential lawsuit. The decision to recall is a purely economic one, if their accountants think it will be cheaper than the calculated risk of potential litigation.
A lot of cars are recalled...Just because there is a recall doesn't mean anything. I'd rather have manufacturers recall their cars instead of ignoring the problems.
And in a globalized economy, its no longer a matter of Made in Japan/USA/Germany/Yugoslavia when it comes to cars, but where the parts are sourced from and/or where its assembled.
And at least Toyota does recall cars to fix any issue.
The big 3 avoid doing recalls.
Toyota delayed many months for the sticking accelerator recall. And, IIRC, paid a $16 million fine.
