Let's admit it, Lexus has come along way in regards to luxury brands. While I always found their designs "safe" and performance ok, and even with an AMAZING reliability, I always found them nice cars, but nothing I would buy. They didn't have the prominence that you get from BMW or MB (although in the last 5-7 years Lexus is pretty much up there) or the sporty feel of Audi or Infiniti. While I know it's one of the top sellers for luxury brands, I just never found Lexus exciting.

That's until I have seen some of their new models coming out. The direction they are going with their design is real edgy, modern and to be honest the direction they are going, I think they are going to kill the competition. Basically, I never wanted a Lexus, but now I do!

Here are some of the models I am talking about:

Lexus NX (coming out this year):

Lexus IS (in pictures don't like this car, but when I saw it in person was like whoa, it's a head turner in person):

Lexus RC (comes out this year):

I'm not a fan of the massive front grill.

I cannot imagine what they're thinking with that "spindle grille" design. It's like the Predator in a tuxedo. In fact I can't wait for this whole "gaping maw" front-end design trend to go away, but Toyota seems the worst offender first with the Lexus spindle grille, then the "Camry raped a Ford Fusion" Avalon grille, to say nothing of the uglification of the 2015 Camry...

Finally, I wish Toyota hadn't ditched their I-6.

The cars are excellent. But their new design language just doesn't do it for me as i prefer a more understated approach to design. like how the pre-spindle grill Lexus were..

Lexus went from this

I think that now that Lexus has been taken seriously as a luxury marque for the last couple decades, they're letting loose a bit and trying to come up with a more obvious brand identity. Up until their last lineup change, there was little similarity in the looks of an LS, ES, GS, LX, GX, or RX... they all looked nice enough on their own but the aerodynamic shape of the RX versus the boxy design theme of the GX... the fact that the GS and LX had quad headlights but none of the other cars did... the IS' flashy and gaudy taillights also found a home on the RX's minor redesign but were absent everything else... but all of them were well-made and solid cars.

I think they will continue to do well, but I would not really consider them a leader in styling. The massive grille they are using looks a little forced and a bit clunky to me. So they lose points there. Otherwise, their vehicles look good but are not really doing anything "new" in the auto industry either. Just more "flame surfacing" styling which is not that uncommon.

I think Acura could overtake Lexus easily if they offered AWD on all of their vehicles and gave them a little more power (which shows how vulnerable Lexus really is). BMW will always reign supreme.

I dunno about Acura. From what I have seen and talked with other people, Acrua's tend to be pretty polarizing cards. I applaud them for having a really different look though.

I used to be a big fan of Lexus until they came out with their recent awful styling language. Between oddly shaped drowsy headlamps and seemingly random cut lines you'd think they were being styled by a blind man swinging a sword at a block of clay. The spindle across the range is bad enough but the new IS (particularly the front end) and the NX crossover take the cake for worst styling contenders. The interiors are actually quite nice but I wouldn't be able to live with myself looking at that ugly mug every morning.

I'll take a CTS-V myself. Too think people complain about the Lincoln grill?
