I have a 2003 Avalon with almost 190K miles. The alarm has been going off by itself a lot lately.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

Thanks.

It sounds like you have a bad alarm control module that's causing this.

The Toyota part # is 8973007021 and it retails for $313.84 plus labor, usually 1-hour !!!

Could be the hood switch. Thump on the hood and see if that sets it off.

No slim jims that I know of. Just started going off at random times. Like 2:30 in the morning, or when my wife is at work. No rhyme or reason.

How hard is it to change the alarm control module?

Thanks,

I know with my Lincoln Mark VIII it was a common issue, and something in the door latches would get gummed up making the car think the door was open which would trip the alarm.

OP, it's located under the right hand side of the dash.

Where are you located?

I didn't fix it, I'm trying to find you the part cheap nearby to you.

The general consensus is that replacing the alarm computer modile will fix it. If I can find you one for fifty bucks it would be a risk worth taking. At the worst you have a spare part.

It may involve removing a few screws and unplugging/plugging in the replacement and putting the screws back in.

On a 2003 with 190K miles I would just deactivate the alarm and be done with it. If you are worried about theft and don't have comprehensive coverage, maybe get a club.
