Acura TLX (though likely too sporty as opposed to comfort of the Avalon)

Hyundai Genesis (especially with the larger 5.0 V-8) is even better than the Avalon. It combines the understated comfort of a Lexus ES with the power of a 5-series. If you like a cruiser you'd be more than happy with the Genesis.

otoh, take a long hard look at Chevy's SS. The interior isn't as luxurious as the Genesis but the power & handling are unreal for a vehicle that's bigger than a Malibu. My friend's dad who's a huge BMW fan got one as a loaner when his C7 Stingray was in the dealer shop. He says it has way more feedback and road feel than his '11 5-series sedan had.
