That's the rub, the winter tires. My old man lived many decades in southeast Michigan and never needed AWD...granted, it's pretty flat...by simply installing snow tires around Thanksgiving each year. They came off in the spring, varying YoY. He mostly drove various Chrysler products, plus my Toyota Supra (that I sold him, back when I was in college).

My Tacoma truck is the worst snow vehicle I've ever driven, a 2wd X-Runner. Not the truck's fault, it is what it is and the rear can certainly get light even in heavy rain. I simply park it in bad weather, of which there is little in Seattle (snow, anyway) and break out the AWD Porsche.

I see people in Priuses around here in light snow, though again ANY 2wd car here in snow, light or not, should have the correct tires (or chains, in heavy snow). Seattle is a bit hilly, thus this really matters those rare times it's necessary.

Maine, yeah: I'd have a Subaru, AND snow tires for my AWD coupe, if one can support multiple vehicles.

If you live in a decent size town or city, and only travel on pavement, the Prius should work fine.

Outbacks are great, but I wouldn't buy one exclusively for snow unless the city is extremely slow at plowing after big storms.
