I took my 4Runner in for something a few weeks ago and was told that one of the bearings in the back is wearing out/worn out and would need to be replaced probably within the month. It's about a month now and things are ok (fingers crossed).

Anyone had this happen to them? He said one day when it's totally worn out the wheels won't roll! I seriously thought this car would run forever without issues but I guess I'm used to leases where I don't have a car more than 3 yrs. My battery died in November and since then just a bunch of random things have gone wrong.

How much did he want to fix it? What exactly did he call it? Is the vehicle making certain noises? I would take it somewhere else and get a 2nd opinion.

Yeah it makes a squeaking noise. Also, I only have 63K miles on it. Seems low, right?
Second opinion is a good idea. He said it'd be about $1000.
He called it exactly what I called it. I had him repeat it to me so I could write it down so I'd have the info handy...for situations like city data

Yes, that's pretty low mileage for this, when rear wheel bearings go out, you have metal on metal, getting hot, and can start a fire. It's pretty easy to tell, by raising the rear wheels, in neutral with brake off, wiggle the tire and see if there is excess movement. It's not a big job, last time I had them done about $150 but that was probably 10 years ago. I would do both sides.

More likely, by the price quoted, he's talking about the rear differential. That seems a fair price, if so, and yes, it will stop going if the go. The metal will fall apart into the gears and cause additional damage as well, so best get it done sooner than later.
