Does anyone know how many forward speeds the automatic transmission for the 2014 Corolla will have?
I've been searching for any such references, and come up empty. Nothing more than a few "Well, we hope it has more speeds", and a number of statements saying Toyota isn't revealing ANY details on drivetrain.
Up till now the auto trans in the Corolla has had 4 forward speeds. Other cars have 5 or 6, or a CVT. But with the great gas mileage the Corolla gets with that 4sp automatic, maybe they're better off not "improving" it?
Anyone heard any definite word on whether the 2014 will have a different auto tranny?
Nobody knows for sure what the transmission specs are because Toyota hasn't said yet. Six is a good guess though since it would be an off-the-shelf unit.
The eleventh generation of the Corolla went on sale in Japan in May 2012.[8] The sedan is named the Corolla Axio while the wagon is called the Corolla Fielder. In Japan, both are made by a Toyota subsidiary, Central Motors, in Miyagi prefecture, Japan.[9] The redesigned model has slightly smaller exterior dimensions and is easier to drive in narrow alleys and parking lots for the targeted elderly consumers.[10]
The new Corolla Axio is available with either a 1.3-liter 1NR-FE or 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE four cylinder engines; front or all-wheel drive. Both 5-speed manual and CVT transmissions are offered. The 1.3-liter engine and all-wheel drive variants are available only with the CVT transmission.[11] The Corolla Fielder is available with 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE or 1.8-liter 2ZR-FAE four cylinder engines mated with a CVT transmission. The 1.5-liter is available with front and all-wheel drive, the 1.8-liter is offered only in front-wheel drive.
I wonder if that's the car that will be coming to the U.S. for 2014?
Zero. It's a Corolla, "speed" is the wrong word to use in association with that vehicle, ever.
Seriously, if it doesn't have a CVT or a 6-speed self-shift of some sort, they may as well give up. Except that all the Toyota-drones will buy it even if it has a 4 speed automatic. So it wouldn't actually surprise me if Toyota continued to use it. They're still using it in the Yaris after all, and even GM moved to a 6 speed automatic in their subcompact.
I sure hope they don't do like Nissan and start going to CVTs. The 6speed auto in the Camry is an excellent transmission, I don't see any reason for them not to put it in the Corolla.
BTW, do you mean, either a 7-speed automatic or a CVT?
CVT's don't have discrete speeds. That's why they're called "Continuously Variable Transmissions".
All true, but automakers will often put in artificial shift points to make the car feel "normal" to the driver, which I could easily see them market as "7-speed CVT", meaning, "We put 7 artificial shift points in here so it feels more traditional and you think it's super efficient since it says 7 speed on there."
