the cop used his brakes to stop a run away car?? LOL and the brakes on the car itself could not stop it? But the cops brakes could as well as stopping his own 4200 lb car? ABSOLUTE false story.

Why do you say it is false? The Prius driver was able to slow down, but the brakes were not being responsive, finally the cop was able to help him slow down and finally stop with the powerful brakes that come in a cop car.

reading and watching that story reminded me of balloon boy not to say that maybe his car had problem but it was so dramatic the way it was played out and still does not explain why he did not slam it into neutral then put on the brakes to stop.

There is no hoax here, it's all true. When the vehicle goes into "Run-a-way" mode, it is impossible to shut it off or put it in neutral. When it happens, your only hope is to hang on a pray.
I see comments in here all the time about the stupid people not shifting to neural or turning it off. They aren't stupid, there is nothing they can do, the car takes over... theres no shifting, no turning off, just prayer...
This one today happened in San Diego and it was on all the local news stations. Until toyota solves the computer problem, the incidents will continue

Police cars have standard passenger car brakes. Nothing special.

Apparently the driver could not shift into neutral. The Prius has an electronic transmission.

More details are coming out saying the police cruiser pulled alongside the Prius used a loudspeaker to tell them to engage the parking brake, then use the regular brakes, and once it was below 50 mph the cruiser pulled ahead and physically slowed the vehicle down.

Other reports say once the police got the vehicle to slow to 50 mph after instructing the driver to engage the parking brake, the driver managed to shut off the engine and coast to a stop.

The official police report is still pending and will clear up the details.

Does this story seem like a complete hoax or what? No one knows how to shift into neutral or how to turn their cars off? Even after calling 911.

This is just another example of those taking advantage of the situation. And this is in California so just another actor out of work trying to get some attention.

CBS News should be ashamed too.
well whether its true or just some attention grab, idk? but i can understand not shifting into neutral. i learned on a manual so would think about it, but i would dare say many if not most drivers these days have never driven a manual in their lives, or its been a very long time, at least

so when you're conditioned simply to put the car in one gear to go forward and one gear to go backward, when the car starts going on its own....well...who even uses neutral for anything in an AT car? never. thats just a place on the gear selector you pass up. if you learned on a manual or have driven one extensively, you know what neutral does and its natural to use it. just tap the gear shift and you're there. if you're conditioned to an auto, confusion and panic may ensue if the car takes off on its own

In some of todays fly by wire cars the COMPUTER can take over thereby taking control away from the driver. Ever have your PC freeze up and you can't even turn it off?
The driver can only control the devices that send input to the computer. What the computer does with that input or signals is supposed to be pretty much fool proof and respond accordingly.
But they are not 100% fool proof. No electronic gadget or mechanical device is.
And Toyota has had enough incidences that have set a pattern of something being wrong with the car other than what is between the seat and the steering wheel.
