I ask because I found a 77 Liftback for $700, and figure these things must be popular with some crowd. It is in decent shape and just needs the idle adjusted.
Some questions, how come liftbacks cost more and are more valuable? Were the others really hardtops with retractable backseat windows? Mechanically, are these cars fairly simple?
Well a hardtop, no b pillar and the back windows go down. According to Wiki they do. Wiki also sites a similarity to Mustangs in body, which I can kind of see.
They might not be as quick as you might expect, but IIRC, 130 hp from a four pot was pretty respectable for the day. After all, in the smog era, the US v8's weren't making much more, with nearly 3 times the capacity.
the handling is fairly good, but a little "wooly". If you'd be pushing it on a little, upgraded shocks are a must.
They were fairly popular in the UK, but, 70's Japanese cars dissolved like alka-seltzers over here when it rained, and especially when the salt went on the roads.
They will be getting scarce now, and a good rust free example will eventually be a reasonable return for your investment.
They're also much prettier than the 2nd gen cars.
Mechanically it's pretty basic stuff, but be aware of possible limited parts availability.
If you're interested in that kind of thing, they're quite tuneable, and have a fair bit of room in the engine bay for engine upgrades, even a performance filter and a sports exhaust will make a reasonable difference. (note, a decent exhaust, not one so big you can see the valves thru).
Turbo engines from GT4/AllTrac Celica could be fitted, and I have seen one at a UK show with a small block Chevy in it. That had taken a fair bit of work tho.
If you can get a hold of one, a Ford Cosworth turbo engine will make it a very quick car
