What do you think of the beds in hotels/motels? (hotel, flight)

I love traveling but hate hotel beds. Yes, the expensive hotels have nice beds and pillows but the more affordable spots have rock hard mattresses that cause me to not sleep and get up in the morning with a backache.

So, what do you think of the motel/hotel beds when you travel?

Lately, they've all been terrible. Even places that are over $400/night weren't comfortable. That seems to be our biggest complaint lately. They make the hotel grounds look really nice, charge an arm and leg for the room and have all sorts of luxurious amenities, yet lack in the bed department. Nothing brings down my rating of a hotel like a terrible bed! We travel very frequently and honestly can't remember the last time we had a good bed. Maybe we should start staying at motels since the higher-end hotels aren't working for us?

Too soft--I'd rather sleep on the floor. Except the bed is cleaner than the floor.

I really don't have a problem with the mattresses, my complaints usually are about the pillows. I've saved many a night's sleep by packing my own. Even on a trip involving a flight, they are easy to pack in a suitcase using those bags that eliminate most of the air.

I stayed in two hotels this past weekend. One was a slimy $65/night motel in the middle of nowhere, Utah. The other was a two bedroom "cabin" and I was squished in a bed with my 12 year-old niece. I slept great on both beds, despite the fact that it wasn't home. My bed at home is a super luxurious pillowtop with a feather mattress pad on top.

I think good pillows matter more to me than good mattresses Give me a nice, firm pillow and I'm a happy camper.
