This is a very good point.
I've posted it here more than once that I wished the delicate ecosystem of the Galapagos had not become a t-shirt destination, and that the islands could left to the people of Ecuador and a few scientists of their choosing.
I'm never going to go there.
(I understand that Ecuador wants the tourism and that many would construe my opinion as elitist--so be it; to me it is wretched that so many one-of-a-kind species are already extinct, and don't get me started on the trash disposal, illegal fishing, and water shortage.)

I do know what you mean, but I can see both sides of it.
I too have experienced a few dodgy scenarios but don't think I would change anyone's mind by listing them, and I understand the instinct for self-preservation.
I guess we all have different comfort zones.

I have heard that Brazil has great beaches, wonderful Marti Gras party, excellent food, is vibrant, and exciting. Don't want to go there, ever. I would be sad seeing the beggars, children begging in the streets. Same for India, I am sure that the Taj Mahal is fantastic, but I would not be able to handle the crowds. I think I will just stay here in the US, maybe go visit Yellowstone or Grand Canyon...

I have absolutely ZERO desire to go to Disney World ... ugh, I know people who think I'm from Mars when I tell them. I just don't get the appeal, seriously. We're probably taking our kids there next spring break and I'm dreading it. I just don't like the fake sterility of it all.

Disney, for a five year old, it's amazing stuff, but I am guessing you don't have the mindset of a 5 year old. You are not missing a thing.

Miami, too damn hot and moldy. Lots of crime and you better speak spanish. I think they should cede Miami over to Cuba. Because that is basically what it is now. OK, there are lots of hot, hot women, but not a place I would deliberately go to again.

Atlanta, too damn hot. For me anyways the main excitement is the Road Atlanta race track in Braselton. Yes there again, lots of hot women and some good food, but plenty of rough parts of town. Not a place you would go voluntarily for vacation. And how they got the Olympics is a mystery.

Mall of America, I can only imagine.

I want to see more of my own country before venturing off to overseas locations. I've only been to 39 states so far.

That being said, I have absolutely no interest in several continents that begin with the letter A (Asia, Antartica, Africa).

I may not refuse to visit these places, but they're not on my "must see" list by any stretch of the imagination.

OMG!! I thought my friend was joking when he told me about Mall of America but I just googled it. It looks really scary - thought I m sure my husband would love it, I just hope no one tells him about it.
I never really thought too much about Disney....but all those children in such a small space plus I never watched Disney (except Mickey Mouse) as a child so - no thanks.
I guess I now go from saying there isn't really anywhere I'd say never about to having 2 places......

I've heard this cop-out line way, way too many times. The real reasons they'll never reveal.

I've done everything in reverse, did all my "hard work"/traveling to foreign countries first, and now it's journeys within my own same-ol'-same-ol'
country.

Thank God they put up Welcome signs when you traverse borders in this country, otherwise you'd never know one from the other.

Last year, I did 4 same-ol'-same-ol' trips, I'm thinking of doing another same-ol'-same-ol' trip to the Deep South, but next year, I know, I'll be back in Central America.
Tegucigalpas, Honduras and the chicken buses are calling me back!

We are the opposite, saving the bits of Europe we haven't been to until we are older and all the long haul flights etc are too exhausting. We can do most of them by coach / train from Switzerland in a couple of days..... and we wanted to have some new locations to look forward to.... so for now as many places in the North and South America as I can in the next 2 years it is...

Would you prefer to have someone TELL you that a hot stove will burn you, or would you prefer to be burned yourself? By having to experience things to learn about them, you have to experience the bad things as well as the good ones--you don't get to pick and choose. Much better to learn about them mentally, in the mind, without ever experiencing them for yourself.
Some kind, thoughtful, compassionate person should bang you over the head with a passport, repeatedly!

The underlying issue? Laziness, laziness at its worst!

I could watch travel video's of every country in the world, but nothing, nothing approximates the experience itself.

Foreign travel can be a helluva lot of work, definitely not for the lazy! You come back from India or China, so exhausted, you can barely make it out of the plane. Is it worth it? Yes, yes, yes and one more yes!

Get that passport updated and go, go, go! That's an order!
