You can get British Pounds in the airport so I wouldn't worry so much about getting them beforehand. There are ATMs everywhere.

I love the idea of getting your son involved. The Eye, a giant ferris wheel, in London would be pretty cool.
He could see some places that pique his interest, like the Tower of London; Stonehenge; Sherlock Holmes' address.

Self-catering is much cheaper than eating out; when in London, I usually eat a large buffet Indian lunch as my big meal. He has to try fish & chips.

I don't suppose places to change currencies in the US are as common as they are here but the airport is the last place I'd choose! In my experience they give a much less fair rate to what you could get in any bank or travel agency in this country. Though I am wondering if the OP is still reading...

ATMs give the same rate as any bank.
I live in Europe and use my ATM card all the time.
There's no difference in the rate no matter where you bank.

I think we got our wires crossed. I thought you meant the currency booths at airports which can get away with ripping people off because they've got you there as a captive audience. Yes, ATMs do give the same rate anywhere. Personally I like to change some cash in a bank or travel agency before going abroad somewhere new to get a feel for what the money's like.

I was thinking the same thing.
Personally, I just get my currency at the ATM when I arrive anywhere.
I live in Europe, so the Euro is my currency at this time; when I go to London to visit friends, it's the ATM for me.

I will say that because I travel to Thailand so frequently, I never exchange back into dollars/euro.
