I'm looking to fly up the week of Christmas. Right now the best rate I am getting is $221 roundtrip. I really need it to be a direct flight and to land in Newark so looking at other airports isn't an option. Anybody getting better rates? What websites are working best for finding the cheapest tickets these days?
I like kayak.com. It allows you to fiddle with times and dates a little more easily than expedia or travelocity. It doesn't look like JetBlue or Southwest offer direct service to Newark, so I don't think you are going to find any hidden bargains.
For the week of Christmas $221 seems pretty cheap to me, but then I am usually flying to Albany, NY where anything less than $300 even during non-peak travel times is a deal.
What dates specifically? If it's just the weekend, you can go for $201 if you leave on the 24th and go home on the 26th. And, $183 from the 24th-28th or 24th to the 30th.
Jet Blue will let you re-book and "bank" the difference in fare if you book with them now and the fares go down. Do they go to Newark?
My DH is going to JFK next week with our boys and literally 12 hours after he booked it, JB offered a sale of $39 each way. He called and they gave him the fare, but took the difference ($180) and put it in a "bank" for future flights (and anyone in the family can use the money in the bank).
Checkout airfare watchdog. You can sign up for their newsletter & your cities of choice & when they find better deals they let you know.
No promise they will always have good deals for your particular cities/dates but doesn't hurt to sign up (and it is free).
Also, once you book your trip register it on Yapta. If the same flight gets listed at a lower price they let you know. Sometimes the re-booking fee wipes out the price difference, but at least they are keeping an eye on it for you.
$221 is a good deal. The fares are only going to go up, take it while you can get it.
