Ive never done a flight where you have to change planes. So this time I need to know how much of a connection time I should allow for in case the plane is late?
Also, is the connection time the same as a layover?? Thanks!
a) What airport? Is it New York/NJ/Chicago that can have all sorts of weather related delays?
b) Are you changing airlines? If you're changing airlines, you likely will have to go from one side of the airport to the other, so will need more time.
c) What airport? Size matters. Chicago, LAX, Atlanta, Newark, Houston, DFW are all huge, and potential travel between terminals takes time.
Also, when you're coming home, don't forget that you have to clear US Customs and Immigration at the first airport you land in, so you'll need to budget time for that as well.
Flying to Tokyo an hour or so is plenty of time. I would try to not have it under an hour. My shortest connection was 40min. But from Tokyo to the US you have to do immigration in the first place u land so I would say at least 90mins but to be safe 2 hours.
