Hey,
I am looking for a cheap bus ride between Boston and DC. I was originally thinking Megabus or Greyhound. I totally can't afford to fly and I am not old enough to rent a car so the bus is my only option at this point. I stumbled onto this site looking for promo codes and fount out that students can get 5% cash back on all Megabus trips when booked with Studentrate.com. Have you guys taken Megabus before? have you heard of this site and their cash back program? Thanks for your help
Thanks for the advice. I am guessing I am ruling out greyhound then... Does anyone know if wifi works on Megabus? It says it is free on the website but considering the extra low cost I have my doubts...
The WIFI has always worked for me, but with the whole bus trying to access it, I didn't have much success streaming video. Email was fine.
Boltbus is also quite good, but I don't think they have direct service from Boston to DC. I usually ride Boltbus because its Baltimore station is very close to where I live, but Megabus is my No. 2 option.
Why stay away from Greyhound? Does Bolt have the $1 fares like Megabus advertises?
Bolt sometimes has $1 fares also. But on both Megabus and Bolt, you have to book way in advance and there might be only 1 oddly-timed bus that has that fare, and maybe they only have 5 of them. It's all about getting people to the website.
The fares are cheap, anyway. It's usually $20-25 from baltimore to NY, which is about what the tolls alone cost.
Greyhound is just completely unreliable, nationwide. Always late, always missing connections (stranding you in bus stations over night), etc. It's really the lowest form of travel. I've used it probably 30 times in the last 10 years, long distance and short trips. Sometimes it's the only way between points A and B, and that's the only time I'd recommend it.
The last time I took a greyhound was about a year ago. We were 30 mins late leaving Boston because the driver wanted to get a milkshake.
My girlfriend takes Megabus from NYC to Boston and back every few months and hasn't had problem. She took Greyhound once (may have been a different itinerary) and they had a bus change somewhere along the route. Apparently the local employees at whatever station they were supposed to switch buses had no idea they were coming. She and all the other passengers had to wait in the middle of the night while they got the nearest driver out of bed at home and down to the station.
Just hope you don't wind up like these guys. (http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/deadly-bus-crash-in-bronx-20110312-lgf - broken link) Shortly after this, the NYPD pulled over 14 buses in one day for random inspections. Literally all 14 of them had to be taken out of service on the spot and towed away for massive violations...
I am interested in taking megabus to DC for memorial day but have heard of the unsafe driving by their drivers. My friend said he felt very unsafe with the driving and the driver's decision to pull over on the shoulder of an interstate to take a break.
It's the cheapest I can find. My tickets will be in the $30 range since I am two weeks out but it still beats the other options.
