We're planning a trip from TX to Maine - considering a stop maybe in Charleston/Myrtle Beach and most routes I've seen go up the East Coast on I-95. It would be nice to see parts of W.Virginia..and other places closer to the coast than going north up through OH which we've seen before.
Just wondering how that route would be going so close to all those cities..is it crazy or do you kind of go around the worst of it. I know in Philly there's a lot of commuter traffic on I-95. We've done a lot of Hwy traveling but we're not used to big city traffic and if we skip Charleston we can go up through OH, West PA/NY along the lake -which is less direct but might be an easier drive in comparison.

depends on when you are traveling. I-95 up is pretty easy, but it can be terrible around DC. Plan your trip so you do not go through DC when it is morning or afternoon commute. and that is from Fredericksburg to MD!!

Have you looked into taking I-81 all the way up to PA (which then it runs into I-78)?

A much more scenic drive and actually more direct....I've taken that way plenty of times from NC to NJ
