I would really like a place with low crime so I could roam around town during the day at least. We'll also pretend this is cricket and include Bermuda in the West Indies. What is your recommendation?

Aruba.

Forget Natalee Holloway who got drunk and got into a car ALONE at 1:30 a.m. with a horny teenager and his 2 companions. Also forget about that other woman who disappeared there recently. She met the guy online, didn't know him very well (obviously) and went on a vacation ALONE with him. Bad judgment on both parts. Aruba was formerly a Dutch colony and there is still a very strong Dutch influence there. It's one of the safest islands the Caribbean. The main crime problem in Aruba is theft from cars, even LOCKED cars and especially rental cars. Don't leave anything of value inside a car that can be seen from outside. If you must, then lock it in the trunk.

We took a cruise to the Caribbean this year. Unfortunately, there is a lot of poverty on many of the islands, so one could feel quite guilty about being on vacation while these folks are so poor. But by the same token, they are dependent on our tourist dollars. We did not care for either Grenada or St. Croix. Grenada was non-stop, poverty-stricken areas our entire tour. St. Croix is mostly scrubby grass rather than some of the other more lush and tropical-feeling islands such as St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Thomas, and Puerto Rico. Antigua has a lot of beaches. Puerto Rico has a really awesome BioIsland Tour of the bioluminescent bay Laguna Grande and the lush El Yunque National Forest (tropical rain forest).

Grand Cayman is very safe.

Jamaica and St. Croix are not. I don't feel Puerto Rico is particularly safe, either.

Everywhere in china meets your standards.
As you can see so many guys roaming on the streets even it's late in the night. Buildings around you are brightly lit.In shopping malls are full of crazy shoppers with large or small bags of stuff bought.

The unwritten standard I have was that the place I am going needs to be a short plane ride from the US. Thus before I had posted my search was limited to a place in Canada or the Caribbean.
