couchsurfing.org? I am wondering how safe something like that really is for a female solo traveler. But i'm seriously looking into it. Anyone with experience?
As stated above, couchsurfing has been mentioned in this forum several times before... in fact, if you'll do a Search just in this forum on couchsurfing, you'll come up with three pages of previous threads where it's been mentioned before.
thank you. i did search for "couchsurfing" specifically, but mostly found threads about how to get around cheaply and not pay for hotels etc, however not specifically about people's experiences with couch surfing themselves. The thread you posted does help though.

Wdcgirl, as a 50-something with two grown sons but no daughters, solo female travelers are some of my favorite surfers to host. We're neither young nor hip, but our household is safe. You might check out the older mom-and-pop type hosts like us.

Been doing similar (hospitality / private guest homes) for over 25 yrs. I frequently send my single gal friends and their daughters out traveling this way.
It has been very safe, but more importantly, very educational for myself and family. We did this as a homeschool family and took LOTS of 6-12 wk field trips several x / yr. I especially enjoy it internationally & in big cities where I can use advice on getting around.
Hosting is just as much fun as staying, and again a GREAT education and chance to engage in the adventures of other travelers. I have also hosted for over 25 yrs and never had an issue. It's fun.
