Also I haven't included Oregon in any plans as yet but there's only so much one can properly do in two weeks.
Eureka at the moment is clouded over, temp is low '60's which is common in the summer. Small city (120,000 in the whole county) and gets better the further away from the freeway you get. Nearby scenery is redwoods and seashores, and if you fish it's supposed to be a terrific salmon season this year. Nowhere near as exciting as Sac but we have something like 20 museums up here, most of them tiny. Economically depressed. six hours from SF if you bomb through, 3 hours from Redding. PM me if you decide to come this way. Have a great trip!
Check out Sea Ranch Lodge on the Sonoma Coast. It is a beautiful, natural development right on the coast. Even if you don't stay there for a night or two, you could eat at the lodge and enjoy walking through the vast property. The rustic, organic architecture is beautiful!
Certainly no trip to Northern Ca would be complete without a drive up the coast from San Francisco to Eureka. Along the way you can see the beautiful Redwoods, the rough ocean and the wonderful little towns. You probably wouldn't want to spend more than a couple days in Eureka but do visit it. As for Sausalito, it is a don't miss, but you can see it all by having lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants on the water front. The charm is pretty much the view....
Good luck and have a great trip whenever you take it...Yes, if you have time and you should head over to Tahoe and stop for breakfast in Placerville.
What time of year? That's critical. More info on your interests would help.
Sacramento is hardly hidden, though the well-known state railroad museum in Old Sacramento is great. Lots of lovely gold rush-era towns in the Sierra foothills. Some, like Allegheny Underground Gold Miners Museum, Alleghany, California might be considered rather hidden, in comparison to towns like Amador City and Sutter Creek.
I really like Bodie and nearby Mono Lake, close to Yosemite, which you have already seen.
