I love road trips. It is fun to take the kids to places we lived when they were young. We took a trip years ago and went to the fish hatchery we used to live at, it was a lot of fun and a nice day weather-wise. We ate at some of our favorite places which felt good. I'd love to take another trip like that one day.
It was almost an out-of-body sensation one time at an apartment complex I where I lived when I moved with my daugther after my divorce--I couldn't catch my breath and felt dizzy. Reliving some of the fears I had back then? Had a strong compulsion to knock on my old apartment door and see who lived there now, but did not. Generally I liked revisiting places from my past to see how they've changed; now I'm a little leery!
I always do, when I am close by. I attended college and lived in Southern California, and when I am there, make it a point to drive by the old houses/apartments I lived in during my years there. I also drive by "old haunts" that I frequented (stores, restaurants, bars, etc). It brings back fond memories.
I only did this once. As a child I lived in Cyprus for 3 years and 10+ years later I went back. Still not sure if it was a good idea as by then the war had happened and the island was partitioned. I got to visit one of our old haunts on the coast that was now pretty much a ghost town, saw entire villages that had been depopulated, buildings I used to spend time in that were pockmarked with bullet holes and abandoned. Kind of an extreme example but it made me realise you can't ever really go back. Besides that, most of my childhood homes were way overseas (Singapore, Hong Kong, Nepal) so it would be quite difficult to get there!
I go back to see what has changed, not specifically to remember the past. But it is a side effect for sure, I hope they have changed but because they were bad before. I just like change
I last visited the home that I was raised in, as a child and teenager, in 2001. I was in the area, in the middle of the day (after a business meeting) and just decided to drive up and drive by. Many, many changes since I last saw it years ago. But, I could still see visions of my teenage years inside of that home.
