I think Amtrak's Autotrain is a good deal. You take your car to either Lorton, Virginia or Sanford, Florida. They load your car on a special car which carries cars while you board your sleeper car, have dinner on board the train and arrive all fresh the next morning at the other end. Plus, you have your car so, you don't need to rent one.
How long does it take, what do you do once you get to Orlando.
Even at that, a whopping $20 difference is not enough for me to give up driving to Orlando, unless I had a car to use while in Orlando, and I never planned on doing anything between NYC and Orlando.

As I said "if you don't need a car" and you only need to get from A-B the train could be cheaper.
If you enjoy a 17+ hr drive than go for it, I'd rather sleep on the train and let somebody else do the driving.
Maybe it depends on time of year because I am not getting $134.00pp I'm getting $175 for one way
Roundtrip total..I'm better off driving and stopping at motel for one night
Like PPD said this is a deal for ONE person. More than one it's not cost effective, but hey thought I would check, it still beats air that time of year

I think you are paying for the Christmas season so the prices are always higher then. The price I got was for Jan 2014 which is $134 not counting the 15% senior discount I get. That would be $113.90
We are driving to Orlando next month so the car is cheaper but in Jan I will go alone and take the train.

That is what I figured but hey it sure as hell beats air fare that is around $750 pp to Ft Myers, may even be higher now as I stopped checking and decided we are driving
Even the rates for the auto train...if I see sloppy icy weather through NC and VA when we are headed back that is an option to get back closer to home even if we need to stay overnight in Lorton when we get there
I just took a train back and fore between L.A. Union Station and San Jose (California). It was quite a bit cheaper than flying and I believe it would have been cheaper than driving (but I haven't driven in years so I didn't consider driving).
