Same reason commercials are ridiculously stupid - ad makers don't care if you like their ad. They care if you remember the name of the product.

I agree, whatever happened to just being yielding and letting the person make a fool out of themselves? I guess that's not gratifying or easy enough for people today.

I see that it all turned out to be an attention-grabbing hoax, which is not surprising, but the commentary that it makes about the world we live in is equally as sad either way.
