On this day in 1925, the very first motor lodge—the Milestone Mo-Tel—opened its doors in San Luis Obispo, California. It was a visionary stroke from entrepreneur Arthur Heineman, who realized there were few lodging options on the road for the country’s increasing army of auto enthusiasts.
I love the old motor lodge style motels where you can drive right up to your unit.
These new multi story motel bunkers are unappealing as many times its a substantial hike from the parking lot to the lobby with all your stuff then another hike down halls to your unit, and if you forgot something in the car its usually a 15 minute trek to make the trip to the car and back.
