For those who want to go, I urge you. I just spent 5 weeks in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. A great trip and worth the effort. If you are "on the fence," don't be. Go. It will be worth your while.
I had the opportunity to work for two weeks supporting flight ops out of the Pietersburg airport. I was only able to take about three days off during that trip and I kick myself everytime I think about it for not taking an additional week or two of personal vacation to "sight see".
South Africa is a fantastic and beautiful country. I've been told that Botswana is also. The South African police would not let me and a Russian associate cross the Limpopo River and the border into Zimbabwe. They said it wasn't safe for us.
I very much look forward to visiting again. Only if flights were not so expensive.

how was your itinerary like? how much you spent overall? im planning to go next year
The best part - it's so accessible. Fly in, grab a rental car, get a highway map, head straight out of Josburg as quick as you can and don't look back, head to the S.A. national parks. We also drove into Swaziland.
There was a thread here a few weeks ago with a suggestion about making this your budget "safari" vacation.
Per the previous post I didn't know Zimbabwe was closed off but I do know they do not recommend Mozambique. Mozambique to SA is like Mexico to the US - but with land mines everywhere (from past wars).

I flew from SFO to Cape Town, via JFK. I stayed in Cape Town for 5 nights and flew to Hoedspruit. Went on a 5 day safari with Kapama Private Game Reserve. Took a shuttle bus to Johannesburg and stayed there for 2 nights. Flew to Livingstone, Zambia for 4 nights to see Victoria Falls. While there, I took a 1 day game drive in Botswana and walked to Zimbabwe. I flew back to Joburg. From there I flew to Rome for 5 nights, Paris for 3 nights, and London for 6 nights.
Its difficult to describe money costs. There are cheap safari's and expensive ones, and everything in-between. Same holds for hotels and airfare. My best advice is make reservations in as far in advance as possible. Airfare and hotel rates are cheaper.
