No one really goes to Vegas on a typical vacation. You go to Vegas if you want to drink, gamble, etc - it's that simple! I don't think you will find many tourists in Vegas looking for sights to see and museums to admire.

That said, Vegas is the best value destination in the entire country if the city meets your definition for a weekend of fun! Great 5-star (lavish) hotels at motel like prices. Cheap food and world class entertainment (shows, standup-comedy, etc). Cheap flights to get into Vegas. What else do you want?

Viva Las Vegas!

I think the cheapest hotels you can find in Rome are beside the main bus terminal (called Termini, I think). It is a very convenient location and one can easily find nice hotel room there for under $75
Termini is actually the main train terminal, although it's an intermodel with many buses stopping in the circle out front.

Some of the most expensive in Rome are near there as well. (Jumeirah Grand, Boscolo, St. Regis, etc.) Luxury hotels in all three cities are all in the same price range. ($300-500 USD) I don't stay in hostels or tourist level hotels in Europe, so it's possible that they are cheaper in Rome.

Oh yes, Termini is the main train station. I got a little confused.

Don't know about luxury hotels. But average tourist hotels are much cheaper in Rome vs Venice/Florence.

yep, I stayed at a hotel 2 minutes from Termini for about $60 a night. Decent place, super convenient location. Direct access to airport and train ride to other cities for those day trips.

Food is inexpensive too, much better than Milan/Venice.

Anyone who says NYC has "low value" either hasn't been there or was too afraid of it's former reputation of "The Rotten Apple" to leave their hotel room and experience it. It is one of the greatest cities in the world, IMO and offers world-class dining, entertainment, museums, architecture and shopping that other destinations cannot possibly measure up to.

I have been twice and am not what one would consider a "gambler". Vegas is an entertainment mecca and its close proximity the the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam add plenty of value for those seeking a break from the tables and flashing lights. I know plenty of people who enjoyed their time in Vegas despite never placing a single bet while there. Besides the endless tables, it offers plenty of world class performances, shows and comedians performing on a nightly basis, along with numerous shopping destinations and fantastic dining options appealing to everyone's budget. I really don't understand what you find so "crass" or "stupid" about that.

FTR: I'd put Toronto on that list long before either NYC or Vegas. It is the very definition of overpriced and offering very little value. Outside the ROM, AGO, CN Tower and joke of a theatre district, what exactly does the city offer?

Which hotels are those? I would love to avoid the casinos whenever possible if I found myself back in Vegas.

I could see NYC being rated a "low value" as it's become mainstream and tame over the past decade. Most of the more unique neighborhoods and streets have been homogenized. There's a Chipotle and PinkBerry on St. Marks, Whole Foods in Union Square, SoHo has the typical shopping mall stores, and so forth. Most of the "unique" boutiques and restaurants have analogues in every global alpha city: Third wave espresso shop, ramen noodles, faux old-timey barber, foodie food truck park, expensive 'made in USA' mens wear, Apple Store, etc. Along with this change a lot of night clubs, legitimate dive bars, weird knick knack shops and hole in the wall food has disappeared.

I've lived there twice and after I moved out the second time I've had trouble thinking of any reason to return.

One personal complaint that I never see mentioned is that the weather in NYC is generally terrible. The winter is cold and the summer is ghastly hot and humid, with frequent storms and heavy rains that ruin your weekend.

The list is BS. Oslo IS expensive but thoroughly charming. Worth going to for the Viking Museum alone (the Fram, the Kon-Tiki etc.)

Mandarin Oriental, Vdara, and Trump are some 5 star options without casinos.

Exactly. There are also museums (The Mob Museum and Atomic Testing Museum for instance), parks (Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire nearby as well as Lake Mead), shopping, live music, and endless people watching. You can ride a great roller coaster or ride the world's tallest sky wheel. You can enjoy amazing pools, including one that has a water slide through a shark tank and another that is a giant beach complete with waves and sand. You can zip line downtown or from the top of the Rio. You can shoot machine guns. I could go on.

I go to Vegas a few times a year and never gamble. I don't have time!
