I like doing trips with friends and family sometimes as bonding experiences, but if I really want to get to know a place, I prefer going alone. I like to stop along the way in smaller cities and towns a lot and take unexpected detours, instead of just driving straight to the destination and spending more time there, and I know this tendency has annoyed people I've traveled with. And conversely, I get really bored when my companions want to spend more than an hour at the beach.
I have been to Europe a few times alone, (as well as a cruise) and it definitely has its pros and cons.
Pros: I can get up and do what I want, when I want. If I want to get up and go out, I can, if I want to sleep in super late and then party all night, I can do that too. I find when people see you traveling solo, people will strike up conversations and possibly ask you to join them. I've meet a few people I still keep in contact with from these scenarios.
Cons: It can get a bit lonely, especially going out to eat or drink. I usually have no problem with someone striking up a conversation so that helps ease that. I get really bored flying alone too, especially on the way back from Europe ( I currently live on the west coast), so, those flights (and potential layovers) seem interminable.
